ST releases USB Type-C Power Delivery software that supports STM32 microcontrollers

     The USB Power Delivery specification supports work modes ranging from traditional 5V/0.5A up to 48V/5A(240W) in the latest version 3.1 specification. Power capacity can spur innovation in product design and contribute to new sustainability laws, such as the recent EU approval of USB Type-C as a universal charging port for all phones, tablets and cameras to reduce e-waste. New product designs utilizing USB Power Delivery include mobile power supplies, smart speakers, PC peripherals, communication devices, medical devices, POS terminals, industrial displays, and battery powered embedded applications.

     Stmicro's X-CUBE-TCPP software package simplifies development efforts in the STM32Cube ecosystem and provides a software library for three USB Type-C port protection ics in the STMicro portfolio. The three chips are the receiving end TCPP01-M12, the power supply end TCPP02-M18 and the dual role power supply (DRP)TCPP03-M20.

     TCPP01-M12, TCPP02-M18 and TCPP03-M20 are available with STM32G0, STM32G4, STM32L5 and STM32U5 microcontrollers (MCUS) of stmicroelectronics for UCPD(USB Type-C and Power) Delivery) interface IP is used to solve the USB power supply problem within the standard power range, with the highest power up to 20V-5A(100 W). Splitting USB Type-C into microcontrollers and port protection chips allows for a two-chip solution to save costs, reduce development complexity, and minimize PCB space. STM32 chip can also be used as the main MCU.

     Additionally, X-CUBE-TCPP assists development on STM32 MCUs that do not contain the Power Delivery PHY, to streamline compliance with the USB Type-C specification.In addition, X-CUBE-TCPP facilitates the development of applications on STM32 MCU without a Power Delivery PHY, simplifying the product's USB Type-C compliance design.

     Users use the X-CUBE-TCPP software library and X-NUCLEO-SNK1M1 expansion board. NUCLEO-G071RB, NUCLEO-G474RE, or NUCLEO-L412RB-P with STM32 MCU can be used to execute code for any of the STM32 Nucleo-64 development boards.Develop Power supply applications. The X-CUBE-TCPP software library can work with X-NUCLEO-SRC1M1 and any non-power Delivery STM32 Nucleo-64 USB Type-C power supply development board. Or the NUCLEO-G071RB or NUCLEO-G474RE USB Type-C Power supply development boards with Power Delivery.

     To develop DRP applications with Power Delivery, the software library would need to work with the X-NUCLEO-DRP1M1 expansion board and the NUCLEO-G071RB or NUCLEO-G474RE motherboards.

     The three boards are certified by USB for Implementers Forum and have a test ID number (TID) representing compliance with the USB-C Power Delivery specification, which ensures that the developer's product interoperates with other certified products in the field. The TID test numbers for these boards are X-NUCLEO-SNK1M1 (TID 5205), X-NUCLEO-SRC1M1 (TID 7884), and X-NUCLEO-DRP1M1(TID 6408).
