ST semiconductor dual channel high side switch brings more flexibility to capacitive load drive design

     The latest intelligent driving high side switches IPS2050H and IPS2050H-32 of ST semiconductor can set two current limiting values, which are applicable to capacitive loads with large starting current. The input voltage range of the two new dual channel switches is 8V to 60V, and the maximum withstand voltage of the input pin is 65V, ensuring that the device has high design flexibility and working reliability in industrial applications. The conduction resistance Rds (on) of the internally integrated power MOSFET transistor is very small, so the energy efficiency is very high and the heat dissipation power is very low. In addition, MOSFET single pulse avalanche energy is greater than 1J at 2A, which can improve the reliability of the switch when driving inductive load. The switch is also integrated with an active clamping circuit, which can realize fast demagnetization.

     The maximum value of main current limiting of IPS2050H can be set as 2.5A, which can drive the load controlled by PLC module, and can also be used for factory automation I/O module, computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools and general resistive, inductive and capacitive loads. The maximum current limit of IPS2050H-32 is higher, reaching 5.7A, and it can drive one-way motors in vending machines and other equipment. The current activation threshold and current limiting value can be set with an external resistor. In the design of capacitive load intelligent drive, the starting current limiting duration is set by the external capacitor.

     To enhance electrical safety and switch reliability, the new device provides comprehensive protection diagnosis functions, including undervoltage lockout (UVLO), overvoltage protection, overload protection, short circuit protection, ground disconnection protection and Vcc disconnection protection. Each channel has an independent fault signal mechanism to indicate overload and junction over temperature events. The new product also provides an additional housing overheat protection sensor. These two new products comply with the ESD, fast transient and surge immunity specifications of IEC 61000-4-2, IEC 61000-4-4 and IEC 61000-4-5.

     STF Semiconductor also provides demonstration boards and software to help users quickly evaluate the drive and diagnostic capabilities when the switch is connected to industrial loads.
