STMicroelectronics Introduces Reference Design Supporting Energy Efficient Power Delivery and PPS

STMicroelectronic has introduced a USB Type-CPower Delivery 3.0 reference design that supports programmable Power supply (PPS), with a maximum Power output of 27W and zero Power consumption without connecting a charging cable to speed up the design of a usable, compact and efficient Power adapter. USB PPS helps to save power, reduce device charging time and heat dissipation, and reduce the bill of material cost on the device side.

    STMicroelectronics recently launched a USB Type-C  Power Delivery 3.0 reference design that supports Programmable Power Supply (PPS), with a maximum output power of 27W and zero power consumption without connecting a charging cable. Efficient power adapter design. USB PPS helps save power, reduce device charging time and heat dissipation, and lower BOM costs on the device side.

 

     The STEVAL-USBPD27S reference design integrates the STM32G071 microcontroller (MCU), the state-of-the-art PWM controller STCH03 and the TCPP01-M12 USB Type-C protection IC. Among them, the STM32G071 monolithically integrates a fully functional USB Type-C Power Delivery controller. This reference design allows users to quickly develop USB fast-charging power adapters that meet the requirements of the EU energy efficiency standard European CoC V5 Tier-2 and the US energy efficiency standard DOE Level VI with the minimum average working energy efficiency and standby power consumption of less than 40mW.

 

     ST's proprietary adaptive synchronous rectification patented algorithm improves charging efficiency. The VBUS control algorithm complies with USB Type-C power delivery and PPS specifications, and implements cable drop compensation to precisely control the supply voltage. The PPS can gradually adjust the output voltage value between 3.3V-11V in 20mV steps, and gradually adjust the current limit value in 50mA steps to minimize the power conversion loss during charging.

 

     As an MCU-based solution, this reference design provides users with more design flexibility to implement other custom application layers and introduce upgrades and improvements to the USB Power Delivery standard.

 

     The power stage of the STEVAL-USBPD27S board uses ST's highly integrated STCH03 PWM controller, which has built-in high-voltage startup circuitry, primary-side constant-current output regulation, and advanced power management functions. Designed for quasi-resonant zero-voltage switching (ZVS) flyback converters, the STCH03 ensures power converters with high energy efficiency, ultra-low standby power consumption and excellent dynamic performance.

 

     The STD7N65M6 MDmesh M6 primary side high voltage STPOWER MOSFET optimizes switching performance in both soft-switching and hard-switching modes, bringing extremely high energy efficiency to application design.

 

     Finally, the TCPP01-M12 provides ±8kV ESD electrostatic discharge protection for the USB VBUS pins and Configuration Channel (CC) pins, meeting IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 safety requirements. There is also short-circuit protection between the VBUS pin and the CC pin, as well as protection against device damage caused by misuse of bad wires.

 

     The STEVAL-USBPD27S is a small and compact ready-to-use evaluation board module with a form factor of 59mm x 35mm x 21mm and a power density of 10.2W per cubic inch.
