STMicroelectronics announces Energy Efficient Intelligent Inertial Measurement Unit to guarantee the life of industrial products

     The ST 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) ISM330BX integrates an edge AI processor, sensor expansion analog hub and Qvar charge change detector, and provides product life assurance for the design of energy-efficient industrial sensors and motion trackers.the new IMU features a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer, a low-noise architecture and a bandwidth of up to 2kHz for vibration sensing in machine condition monitoring. Other uses include industrial robots, household robots, intelligent feed trucks (AGVs), smart appliances, and motion trackers.

     The ISM330BX also incorporates ST's edge processing engine. The IMU also incorporates ST's 3D directional tracking sensor Fusion Low Power (SFLP) algorithm to improve energy efficiency in applications such as robotics and smart helmets. With Adaptive Self-configuration (ASC) capabilities, the sensor can also automatically optimize Settings in real time for optimal performance and power consumption.

     The autonomy of the ISM330BX reduces the amount of data transferred between the IMU unit and the host system, and reduces the computing effort of the main processor, ensuring low latency and low power consumption. The integrated analog hub can connect external analog sensors directly to the edge processing engine for data filtering and AI inference, providing more opportunities for energy-efficient system integration. The many energy saving features of the ISM330BX enable engineers to implement innovative battery-powered smart devices such as industrial sensors, upgrade existing industrial assets, and increase intelligence in anticipation of Industry 5.0.

     The IMU also includes ST's Qvar charge change detector, enabling the application of value-added features such as integrated touch detection and proximity detection or water leak detection to improve system integration and energy efficiency.

     The release of the ISM330BX drives the development of MEMS technology for industrial use, further enriching the MEMS development ecosystem by providing basic hardware such as the STEVAL-MKI245KA adapter board. There are also free software resources available on GitHub, including MEMS Studio and ready-made application samples, to provide a collaborative and innovative development environment for developers.

     The ISM330BX IMU was unveiled at the Sensor and Test 2024 event in Nuremberg, Germany, to reveal the future of industrial motion sensing. At the event, ST presented an insightful keynote on the ISM330BX's technological innovations in robotic monitoring and its potential to transform the future of motion sensing applications. A special presentation was a highlight of the event, where attendees were able to see for themselves the outstanding capabilities of the ISM330BX in anomaly detection applications.
