STMicroelectronics announced the STSPIN9 series of high-current motor driver chips, the first launch of two products, the application of high-end industrial equipment, home appliances and professional equipment. The 4.5A STSPIN948 and 5.0A STSPIN958 integrate PWM control logic circuits and 58V power stages, as well as system protection functions and two current detection op-amps, suitable for driving DC brush motors and bipolar stepper motors.

     STMicroelectronics announced the STSPIN9 series of high-current motor driver chips, the first launch of two products, the application of high-end industrial equipment, home appliances and professional equipment. The 4.5A STSPIN948 and 5.0A STSPIN958 integrate PWM control logic circuits and 58V power stages, as well as system protection functions and two current detection op-amps, suitable for driving DC brush motors and bipolar stepper motors. Both chips allow developers to flexibly configure and scale power levels while streamlining bill of material costs.


     The STSPIN948 chip has two full-bridge topologies that can be configured into different drive modes, giving developers the flexibility to select different configurations and drive multiple motors with different power ratings. The STSPIN948 has several PWM current control modes to choose from, including fixed shutdown time or current threshold Settings, and supports five operating modes. The 4.5A IC comes in a 7mm x 7mm VQFPN48 package.


     The STSPIN958 has only one full-bridge topology and can be configured to drive two unidirectional motors, a bidirectional DC brush motor, or a higher current unidirectional motor if the power output pins are connected in parallel. The chip also offers a fixed turn-off time and configurable current control mode options, as well as dual half bridge, single full bridge and half bridge parallel configurations, supporting seven motor drive modes. The 5.0A STSPIN958 comes in a 5mm x 5mm VFQFPN32 package.


     The wide operating voltage range and flexible configuration make the STSPIN948 and STSPIN958 motor drivers suitable for a variety of industrial applications, including factory automation systems, textile machines, industrial robots, domestic robots, stage lighting systems, ATMs and cash counters, antenna controllers, vending machines, and more. As well as most commonly used household appliances and industrial equipment.


     Both driver chips allow designers to use an external resistor to set the output transistor's voltage swing rate to 0.3V/ns, 0.6V/ns, 1.2V/ns, or 2V/ns to find an ideal balance between power consumption and electromagnetic compatibility. Built-in dead time mechanism can effectively prevent breakdown, each MOSFET on-resistance is only 200mΩ, can maximize energy efficiency. The 280ns propagation delay ensures a fast response to system commands.


     Each chip comes with a full set of protection features, including overcurrent, overheat and short circuit protection, as well as bus undervoltage detection and undervoltage lock (UVLO). In order to help users develop applications with these two chips and shorten the project development cycle, ST also provides a simple and user-friendly evaluation board at an affordable price. The EVSPIN948 is equipped with the STSPIN948 chip, which can drive up to two motors, and the EVSPIN958 is equipped with the STSPIN958 chip, which can only drive one motor. Each evaluation board is designed as a motherboard expansion card that supports most STM32 Nucl development boards and the Arduino® UNO R3 interface.
