STMicroelectronics has launched STPay-Mobile, a mobile payment platform that simplifies the virtualization of bus and payment cards on smartphones and wearables and meets the stringent security standards for such applications. STPay-Mobile enables mobile device manufacturers to leverage the capabilities of ST's ST54 Security System-on-a-chip (SoC) to process contactless transactions and protect sensitive information such as user data and security certificates.
To highlight the value STPay-Mobile brings to card virtualization applications, ST has announced technical details of a bus ride card solution based on Snowball Technology's OnBoard™ platform. STPay-Mobile managed services run on the ST54 system chip and work with the OnBoard™ platform to enable easy to develop and purchase virtual tickets on smartphones and wearables.
Ciaran Fisher, CEO and co-founder of Snowball Technologies, said: "The ST54 product family and the new STPay-Mobile service, in conjunction with Snowball's OnBoard™ platform, enable smart device vendors and public transport companies to develop virtual ticketing cards using the world's most widely supported contactless card standard. Snowball and ST share a common vision for developing smart, secure, connected life products and services. "ST's security, high-performance semiconductors and Snowball's innovative OnBoard platform will advance 21st century smart cities."
Marie-France Li-Sai Florentin, Vice President of stmicroelectronics Microcontrollers and Digital IC Products and General Manager of the Security Microcontrollers Division, said: "We are launching the STPay-Mobile service to help smartphone Oems leverage the ST54 SoC's strong security and efficient NFC capabilities to develop next-generation products that will drive the future of virtual ticketing and payments." "The STPay-Mobile service, combined with Snowball's OnBoard platform, creates a highly scalable and flexible no-pick payment solution that allows bus companies to introduce virtual ride cards on the bus network without changing existing systems and infrastructure."
To date, Snowball's OnBoard platform has been used by 50 bus companies in more than 125 cities worldwide, including all major cities in China. The platform is compatible with more than 330 different models from major smartphone and wearables brands and has reached more than 680 million urban people.
