STMicroelectronics expands its market-unique STM32WL Long Range SubGHz wireless system-on-chip (SoC) product line with new products that offer flexible configuration and packaging options for a diverse range of mass market applications.

     STMicroelectronics expands its market-unique STM32WL Long Range SubGHz wireless system-on-chip (SoC) product line with new products that offer flexible configuration and packaging options for a diverse range of mass market applications.

 

     As the only system chip on the market that can connect to LoRa Low power Wide Area Network (LPWAN), the STM32WL series enables users to create energy-efficient and reliable Internet of Things (IoT) devices in very compact sizes. LPWAN is a cost-effective wireless connectivity technology that can cover vast geographic areas and remote locations, extending the reach of iot and enabling smart technology to bring higher value to utilities, agriculture, logistics, transportation and other industries.

 

     Ricardo de Sa Earp, Vice President of MicroControllers at STMicroelectronics, said: "Remote iot such as LoRaWAN or Sigfox now covers the world, and innovative and practical smart devices such as environmental monitoring and asset tracking applications can be connected to iot at any time. "Bringing our unique single-chip integrated microcontroller and multi-modulated RF system chips to the mass market will allow developers to create even more exciting new products while leveraging the benefits of these networks to bring unmatched functionality, use and value."

 

     The STM32WL series integrates ST's STM32 ultra-low power microcontroller (MCU) architecture with a Sub-GHz RF subsystem that supports multiple modulation schemes. Supported modulation protocols include LoRa technology with low RF signal power but high receiver sensitivity. (G)FSK, (G)MSK, and BPSK modulation technologies used in protocols such as Sigfox, Wireless Instrumentation Bus (wM-Bus), and other proprietary protocols and Sub-GHz standards. The on-chip RF subsystem has two optional power outputs to help customers comply with power limits for unlicensed band radios around the world.

 

     The STM32WL model includes the dual-core STM32WL55 based on the Arm® Cortex-M4 kernel and Cortex-M0 + MCU kernel. Developers can use two cores with full openness and flexibility, and the dual-core architecture enables effective hardware isolation, enhanced network security, application updates without re-certifying devices, and enhanced real-time RF and application performance.

 

     The STM32WL55 follows the introduction of the single-core STM32WLE5 in January 2020 in both the BGA73 and QFN48 packages for RF and application processing using the Cortex-M4 main kernel. The expanded lineup also adds two non-lora models, the single-core STM32WLE4 and the dual-core STM32WL54, giving developers the flexibility to use this unique system chip in new wireless IoT projects, all of which are covered by ST's 10-year supply guarantee for industrial products.
