STMicroelectronics introduces two fast start intelligent power switches

     STMicroelectronics introduces two quick-start intelligent power switching devices (IPS) to meet the needs of higher security applications. IPS160HF and IPS161HF, whose on-off delay time is less than 60µs, can meet the standard requirements of SIL CLASS-3 Class C and D interface applications.

     The products feature a wide input voltage range of 8V-60V, a maximum switching on-resistance (RDS(on)) of 120mΩ, a voltage rise/fall time of 10µs, and a transmission delay of 20µs for flexibility, low power dissipation, and fast response. Upgraded diagnostics can indicate open load, over current shutdown, and over heat shutdown, simplifying functional design for safety needs.

     The IPS160HF and IPS161HF can safely drive complex resistive, capacitive and inductive loads grounded at the other end, such as solenoid valves, relays and lamps. In addition to SIL grade applications such as safety sensors, it can also be used in general factory automation and process control equipment such as programmable logic controllers (PLCS), I/O peripherals, and computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools.

     As intelligent power switches, the IPS160HF and IPS161HF integrate logic interfaces, driver circuits, various protection functions, and an n-channel power MOSFET output stage. The IPS160HF internal output stage is limited to 2.5A(Min), and the IPS161HF is limited to 0.7A(Min). Both devices can withstand supply voltages up to 65V and incorporate active clamping circuits to handle inductive loads.

     Built-in protection mechanisms include GND open circuit and VCC open circuit protection, thermal shutdown, undervoltage protection, and short circuit shutdown to protect chips, applications, and overload situations. The turn-off delay can be set by an external capacitor, and the turn-off protection will act immediately after the preset delay, and the device will consume almost no power after the turn-off to reduce heat.
