The new HFDA801A from STMicroelectronics is a high-resolution audio amplifier chip designed specifically for compact, cost-effective automotive audio systems. The HFDA801A is a 2MHz switching frequency, pulse-width-modulated (PWM) Class D amplifier in a four-bridge configuration with integrated high-performance digital-to-analog converters (DAC) that deliver high fidelity sound quality under any load conditions, with noise-free on/off operation and no distortion in output. With a signal-to-noise ratio of 121dB, a dynamic range of 120dB, and an output noise of only 10μV, the HFDA801A delivers excellent audio performance at a low price and in a small size.
The feedback configuration with an integrated L-C low-pass filter gives the amplifier an ultra-wide smooth frequency response of up to 80kHz and minimizes dependence on external components. The high bandwidth allows amplifiers to be used in high-definition (HD) audio scenarios, allowing designers to rely on excellent linearity and low distortion regardless of the product quality of selected inductors and capacitors.
The amplifier has an architecture that supplies the full power supply voltage internally, allowing the HFDA801A to draw power from the vehicle battery without the need for additional power converters. With a wide load range, the new amplifier ensures stable performance even with high-power drive of four-way 2Ω low impedance loads.
In addition, by integrating real-time diagnostics, digital impedance meters, and real-time load current monitors, the HFDA801A can also be used in safety-related audio applications that must comply with ASIL requirements, such as electric vehicle Low Speed Tone systems (AVAS).
