STMicroelectronics joins mioty Alliance to expand iot application opportunities at scale

     STMicroelectronics announces support for the mioty standard that enables highly scalable, ultra-low-power wireless networks over long distances, facilitating the next generation of Massive IoT applications driven by scale rather than speed. It also joined the Mioty Alliance, a Mioty specification management and technology promotion organization, and released a protocol stack developed by ST licensed partner Stackforce, allowing customers to develop Mioty devices using the STM32WL wireless system-on-a-chip (SoC).

The Mioty protocol stack further strengthens the STM32WL SoC ecosystem. "The STM32WL SoC supports a variety of common Sub-GHz LPWAN networking technologies, such as LoRaWAN, Sigfox and wM-Bus, and provides users with a unique level of functional integration that saves space, power and time to market."

     The Mioty communication protocol uses an advanced message splitting technology that has been approved as a telecommunications standard by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The technology's extremely short RF transmission time helps extend device battery life without the logistical problems of changing batteries for large-scale iot devices. In addition, the short transmission time minimizes interference from nearby RF signals and allows thousands of Mioty nodes to coexist on the same network.

     Mioty packets can be transmitted for several kilometers in areas with buildings, with line-of-sight distances of more than 15 kilometers, and outdoor areas such as large industrial or oil fields can be covered with only a few base stations. In addition, mobile Mioty devices can communicate at a maximum speed of 120km/h without signal attenuation issues, making them suitable for applications such as fleet management, asset tracking and anti-theft detection.

     The Mioty stack for the STM32WL was developed by Stackforce, a founding member of Alliance Mioty and a ST licensed partner, and is delivered in the form of a software library that integrates directly with the application, or firmware written directly to the modem SoC.Stackforce Managing Director David Rahusen said: "The STM32WL is already recognised by the market as a very robust platform, particularly in terms of multi-protocol stack support.
