ST launches a new microcontroller development ecosystem that supports prototype boards at all price points and the STM32L4 series of STM32Cube software already in production. The STM32L4 prototype board includes a full-featured evaluation board (STM32L476G-EVAL) and Discovery Kit exploration Kit (STM32L476G-DISCO). Features include MEMS microphones and motion sensors, a digital-to-analog converter, a 96-segment LCD LCD screen, and a 16MB QSPI flash memory. Users can dynamically tune software and hardware freely during project development to reduce design risks.
Engineers, students, and electronics enthusiasts on a budget can develop performance-oriented and energy-saving embedded designs with the very affordable STM32 Nucleo circuit board (NucleO-L476RG). The Nucleo board is equipped with an Arduino Uno strip to connect to various Shield expansion boards, and the ST-Link debugger/programmer is integrated to meet the needs of all individual debuggers, and flash code writing supports mouse drag and drop operation. Both Discovery and Nucleo boards can be directly connected to mbed online tools.
The new development ecosystem offers the complete STM32Cube software suite, including built-in design wizards and the STM32CubeMX configurator and initialization code generator for the power calculator. In addition, the embedded software dedicated to the STM32CubeL4 model also provides a Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), application examples, and a new underlying API to maximize performance and runtime efficiency. The API, in conjunction with HAL, simplifies porting development projects using the STM32 standard peripheral library to the STM32Cube environment.
The STM32L4 microcontroller is equipped with an 80MHz ARM® Cortex®-M4 core with built-in DSP extended instruction set and floating point unit. Power savings are achieved with the smart architecture of built-in FlexPowerControl, dynamic voltage scaling, and seven power management modes, including sub-mode options. Among these features, the Batch Acquisition Mode (BAM) allows data to be collected from peripherals, even when the kernel power is turned off.
