STMicroelectronics upgraded sensor evaluation board, integrated with ST MEMS Studio development environment

     The STEVAL-MKI109D, a new generation sensor evaluation board, enables faster, more powerful and more flexible development of MEMS sense-based context-aware applications. The new evaluation board has now been upgraded with the STM32H5 microcontroller, USB-C connectors, and the addition of multiple digital interfaces such as I3C, increasing the flexibility of data communication, allowing users to quickly evaluate sensors and tackle challenging projects with confidence.

     In a live technical lab broadcast, the engineers revealed the technical details of the STEVAL-MKI109D, demonstrating the plug-and-play process where the sensor module is plugged in, connected to a PC, and data analysis can begin in the ST MEMS Studio software. Within this all-in-one graphical development environment, developers can visualize sensor output data, quickly fine-tune parameter Settings, configure functions, and train the AI capabilities of ST sensors with the module's built-in machine learning core (MLC) and Intelligent Sensor Processing Unit (ISPU). The tool provides advanced power monitoring, power supply voltage management and other features to help optimize energy consumption and debug.

     St's MEMS portfolio includes inertial sensors, pressure sensors, biosensors, and digital and analog microphones, offering different sensing speeds, accuracy, and ranges in a variety of packaging styles for industrial, consumer, and automotive applications. St's MEMS products are compact, robust and suitable for a variety of harsh working environments, including consumer products, smartphones, wearables, smart home devices, industrial sensors, security equipment, healthcare, environmental monitoring and more. The target applications of vehicle regulation products include navigation AIDS, advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving.

     Each sensor has a companion evaluation module, which is mounted on a convenient DIL24 board and can be connected directly to the STEVAL-MKI109D board through a pin slot on the board. Other plug-and-play accessories include biosensor electrodes and remote sensing extension cords to quickly evaluate sensors while developing proof-of-concept models and product prototypes.

     The STM32H5 MCU is the core component of the new evaluation board and features a new high-performance, energy-efficient Arm® Cortex-M33 core and a wealth of peripherals to speed up and facilitate application development. When a customer is developing a sensor project, the target microcontroller can be any of the more than 1,400 STM32 microcontrollers and microprocessors. The MEMS sensor module's internal MLC core, finite state machine (FSM), and ISPU processor help optimize application performance and power consumption for outstanding functionality, response, and battery life.
