Samsung Electronics has introduced the first in-car SSD based on the eighth generation V-NAND

Samsung Electronics has announced the successful development of its first PCIe 4.0 in-car SSD based on 8th generation V-NAND technology.      Samsung Electronics has announced the successful development of its first PCIe 4.0 in-car SSD based on 8th generation V-NAND technology. Samsung's new AM9C1 in-car SSD delivers industry-leading speed and improved reliability, making it a solution for in-car applications with end-to-end AI capabilities. Samsung's new 256GB AM9C1 in-car SSD delivers approximately 50% more energy efficiency than its predecessor, the AM991, and sequential read/write speeds of up to 4,400MB/s and 400MB/s, respectively.

 

     Hyunduk Cho, vice president and head of the automotive business of Samsung Electronics' memory division, said: "We are working with global self-driving car manufacturers to provide these companies with high-performance, high-capacity in-vehicle products. Samsung will continue to drive the Physical Artificial Intelligence (Physic AI) memory market, which covers everything from autonomous driving to robotics.

 

     Based on Samsung's 5 nanometer (nm) controller, the AM9C1 offers a single layer unit (SLC) namespace  capability, and its superior performance makes it easier to access data-intensive files. Users switch the initial Layer 3 cell (TLC) state to SLC mode and experience significantly improved read and write speeds of up to 4,700MB/s and 1,400MB/s, all while taking advantage of the increased reliability of SLC SSDS.

 

     At present, Samsung's key partners are conducting sample testing of the 256GB version of the AM9C1, which is expected to start mass production by the end of this year. To meet the growing demand for high-capacity in-car SSDS, Samsung plans to launch a lineup of AM9C1 memory products with various capacity specifications ranging from 128GB to 2TB. The largest of these, the 2TB SSD, is expected to begin mass production early next year.

 

     Samsung's new in-car SSD has passed the more stringent board-level tests to meet the AEC-Q100 Level 2 temperature test standard for automotive semiconductors, maintaining stable operation over a wide temperature range of -40°C to 105°C.

 

     To further meet the high standards of reliability and stability in the automotive industry, Samsung Electronics has obtained the CSMS (Cybersecurity Management System) certification based on the ISO/SAE 21434 standard. In March this year, Samsung's in-vehicle UFS 3.1 products passed ASPICE (Automotive Software Process Improvement and Capability Assessment) CL3 certification.

 

     Hwaseok Oh, Executive Vice President, Memory Business Unit, Samsung Electronics, said: "ASPICE and ISO/SAE 21434 certifications are milestones that demonstrate the reliability and stability of Samsung technologies. Samsung will continue to improve the stability and quality of its products and provide excellent solutions to key partners.
