Samsung Electronics has announced a partnership with Red Hat to successfully validate the interoperability of its CXL memory with Red Hat's latest operating system in a user environment for the first time in the industry, a development that will enable data center and enterprise customers to leverage CXL memory for high-performance computing without major hardware changes.
Samsung and Red Hat first signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop next-generation memory in May 2022, and agreed to continue to promote CXL open source code and reference model development through Samsung Memory Research Center (SMRC). The current collaboration spans multiple areas, including a range of storage and memory products such as NVMe SSD, CXL memory, compute memory/storage, and Fabrics.
Yongcheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics, said: "Samsung has been at the forefront of building the CXL memory ecosystem by working closely with industry partners such as software, data center, server and chipset providers. Our CXL memory technology collaboration with Red Hat is an example of advanced software and hardware collaboration that will enrich and accelerate the development of the entire CXL ecosystem."
Marjet Andriesse, Senior Vice President and Head of Asia Pacific at Red Hat, said: "The successful validation of Samsung CXL memory expander interoperability with Red Hat Enterprise Linux is significant because it extends the applicability of CXL memory expander to Red Hat software based on IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a service). This is an important milestone in the integration of hardware and software, building an open source ecosystem for the next generation of memory development."
Samsung and Red Hat are collaborating on the RHEL 9.3 CXL Memory Usage Guide, designed to help users leverage Samsung's CXL memory performance on RHEL 9.3 and build high-performance computing systems in a variety of user environments.
