Sensirion introduces new digital temperature sensors

     Environmental sensing specialist Sensirion has announced the launch of its new STS32 temperature sensor. The digital sensor comes with an ISO 17025 certified three-point calibration certificate. Calibration data and sensor specifications comply with Good Distribution Practice (GDP) for pharmaceuticals and medical logistics. Data logger manufacturers can eliminate costly and technically difficult calibration operations by integrating STS32 into their recorders.

     Pharmaceutical logistics is a highly regulated industry. When transporting pharmaceutical products, minimal temperature monitoring must be maintained to ensure product and patient safety. A special quality requirement involves a three-point temperature calibration of the recorders used, thereby proving their suitability. With analog temperature sensors commonly used in the past, the entire measurement chain must be calibrated, which limits the scalability and cost optimization of calibration. At the same time, digital sensors integrated into the complete measurement chain on the chip allow the use of pre-calibrated temperature sensors in data loggers, eliminating the need for manufacturers to perform additional calibration procedures.

     The STS32 is based on the universal STS3x platform and is a digital temperature sensor based on I2C. It has accuracy specifications for GDP and includes a three-point calibration certificate provided by Sensirion's new ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited calibration laboratory. Calibration set points are T = -30°C, 5°C and 70°C. All values are provided in a machine-readable CSV file format and can be associated with the relevant sensor by using the sensor's unique and unchangeable serial number. The metrology traceability of the calibration complies with Chapter 6.5 of ISO/IEC 17025:2017, under the CIPM Mutual Identification Arrangement (CIPM MRA), which usually refers to NIST traceability or traceability to other national metrology bodies.

     Calibration certificates and data for each STS32 sensor can be downloaded from the server address specified in the shipping file, enabling efficient processing by the automated system. STS32 users can combine the calibration data provided by the sensor with the calibration information required by the logger. As a result, the use of digital pre-calibrated temperature sensors can fully cover the calibration process while meeting the stringent quality requirements of the pharmaceutical and medical industries.
