Sensirion introduces the SWT50i, the first product in its series of water quality sensors

The SWT50i Water quality sensor helps evaluate organic substances in water, enabling users to control water treatment processes and monitor water quality. The sensor acts as a spectrophotometer to measure absorption in the UV-C range, allowing users to monitor a variety of typical organic pollutants such as benzene, antibiotics, pesticides, detergents, plastics, and solvents. Its ultra-small size (70 mm x 70 mm x 70 mm) and flow-through design make it easy to integrate into a variety of challenging designs while meeting the highest requirements for reliability and cost-effectiveness.

     Sensirion announced the launch of the SWT50i, the first product in its series of water quality sensors. Based on the principle of UV absorption measurement, the water quality sensor is small, easy to integrate and cost-effective. The SWT50i Water quality sensor helps evaluate organic substances in water, enabling users to control water treatment processes and monitor water quality.

 

     The sensor acts as a spectrophotometer to measure absorption in the UV-C range, allowing users to monitor a variety of typical organic pollutants such as benzene, antibiotics, pesticides, detergents, plastics, and solvents. Its ultra-small size (70 mm x 70 mm x 70 mm) and flow-through design make it easy to integrate into a variety of challenging designs while meeting the highest requirements for reliability and cost-effectiveness.

 

     Organic pollutants, climate change and related water shortages are putting increasing pressure on water supplies. Water quality measurement technology plays an important role in this regard, helping to improve the efficiency of the purification process, monitoring its effectiveness and ensuring compliance with legal guidelines.

 

     Typically, these pollutants can only be measured at a small number of points with a total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer. Moreover, these laboratory instruments are expensive and complex to use and cannot be monitored in real time. On the other hand, the ultraviolet absorption detection method is based on the characteristics of organic matter to absorb ultraviolet light. While online devices for measuring UV absorption exist, so far they have only been designed as probes and are quite expensive.

 

     The SWT50i uses the same UV absorption measurement principle, but offers an ultra-compact new shape size at an attractive price. This makes it possible to take multiple measurements in one system, or to provide measurements for scenarios that could not have been applied in the past due to cost issues. In addition, the SWT50i is designed as a flow-through water quality sensor that, unlike existing probes, can be easily inserted into a closed hose system with a small diameter (5-15 mm).

 

     The SWT50i is part of Sensirion's realization vision to enable wide-area sensor networks to better record processes or environments. This allows for a more efficient and environmentally friendly use of precious water resources. With this sensor, sensor expert Sheng Sirui entered the field of water quality measurement for the first time. With this cost-effective and easy to integrate sensor, we hope to achieve comprehensive water quality measurement, including: production process, waterworks, distribution systems or household water purification.
