SiTime, Inc. announced the launch of the SiTime XCalibur active resonator. By using programmable semiconductors, this innovative product provides a direct alternative to quartz crystal resonators, thereby addressing supply chain constraints. In addition, XCalibur offers improved performance and reliability in addition to reducing development times for automotive, enterprise and industrial applications by up to two months.

We will continue this legacy by developing new MEMS-based active resonators to open up a $200 million SAM in the $4 billion resonator market for SiTime. Our new XCalibur active resonator solves the quartz resonator supply problem with programmable capabilities that simultaneously use a quartz-independent semiconductor supply chain. On top of that, quartz resonators were notorious for a number of design challenges that required more testing and development, ultimately delaying projects. XCalibur addresses these challenges by providing a more reliable and flexible direct alternative that is very easy to implement."
Quartz resonators have some well-known weaknesses, such as susceptibility to strong EMI field interference, testing for negative resistance at each design layout cycle, and requiring certification at each frequency. With the XCalibur active resonator, customers can completely avoid startup problems or EMI problems and no longer have to send the board to a quartz manufacturer for negative resistance testing. In addition, customers can implement new frequencies in the same design without having to re-certify the resonators. All these advantages help customers speed up the process of bringing their products to market.
The SiTime Xcalibur active resonator is up to 10 times more reliable than quartz resonators, making it ideal for automotive and industrial applications that require high reliability and long service life in harsh environments. The MEMS-based resonator could also be used in communications and networking, enterprise, consumer electronics, mobile and iot, and aerospace and defense applications.
