
SiTime announced the launch of the Cascade family of MEMS clock ics for 5G, wired communications and data center infrastructure. The ClkSoC series, numbered SiT9514x, consists of a clock generator, jitter eliminator and network synchronizer to deliver multiple clock signals through a single system. The clock family uses SiTime's recently launched third-generation MEMS resonators to deliver higher performance with lower power consumption.
Communications and enterprise electronics used to use clock ics (with external quartz references) to integrate multiple timing functions and distribute clock signals. SiTime's new all-silicon clock architecture integrates a MEMS resonator as a clock reference source within the package, providing a higher degree of integration. What's more, using SiTime's proven MEMS technology, Cascade's on-chip clock system improves reliability and resilience by a factor of 10, achieving zero 5G outages. The SiT9514x can be used alone or in conjunction with SiTime's MEMS TCXO and OCXO, providing a complete timing solution for applications such as 5G RRU, small base stations, edge computers, switches and routers.

5G is expected to increase speed by 10 times, increase data volume by 10,000 times, reduce latency by 50 times and achieve zero outages. To make these goals a reality, 10 to 30 times more equipment will need to be deployed than is currently the case. Many of these are placed in uncontrolled environments close to consumers. Each of these new connected devices is dependent on the accuracy, resilience and reliability of the system's timing devices. MEMS silicon timing technology fundamentally provides superior reliability and resilience and is key to supporting 5G to achieve the established quality of service.
