Silicon Labs has unveiled Secure Vault technology, a new suite of advanced security features designed to help connected device manufacturers address the escalating security threats and regulatory pressures of the Internet of Things (IoT). Silicon Labs' Wireless Gecko Series 2 platform takes full advantage of Secure Vault by combining best-in-class security software capabilities with Physically unclonable functionality (PUF) hardware technology, significantly reducing the risk of iot security breaches and intellectual property compromise.
Matt Johnson, senior vice president and general manager of iot products at Silicon Labs, said: "With the security landscape changing rapidly, iot developers are under pressure to improve device security and meet evolving regulatory needs. "Secure Vault leverages the most advanced hardware and software security protections available for IoT wireless SoCs today, simplifying development, speeding time to market and helping device manufacturers build future-proof products."
Secure Vault's hardware capabilities provide the best level of security in a cost-effective wireless SoC solution. The security subsystem (including dedicated cores, buses, and memory) is separated from the host processor. This unique hardware separation design isolates critical functions, such as secure key management and encryption, into their respective functional areas, making the entire device more secure. The new portfolio of security features is ideal for companies working on emerging regulatory initiatives, such as Europe's GDPR and California's SB-327.
Tanner Johnson, senior cybersecurity Analyst at Omdia, said: "Embedded security is an important requirement for IoT products, and software updates alone will not address all the vulnerabilities that exist in insecure hardware. As a result, hardware components can form the first line of defense for device security, especially as new regulations for iot product security continue to roll out."
Secure Vault improves IoT security with a unique combination of hardware and software capabilities, making it easier for product manufacturers to protect their brands, designs, and consumer data. Integrating security systems with wireless SOCs can help designers streamline the development process and securely update connected devices over the air (OTA) throughout the product lifecycle. By providing authentic, trusted software or firmware to connected products, you can help mitigate unforeseen vulnerabilities, risks, and regulatory measures.
