Single chip high resolution color sensor

Texas Instruments OPT4048 Trichromatic XYZ Color Sensor is a single-chip high-resolution color sensor capable of measuring four channels, each with a specific designed spectral response. Three of the four channels closely match the CIE tricolor spectrum, and the fourth channel has a wideband spectral response. By taking measurements from these channels, important properties of the lighting environment can be extracted, such as (i) light intensity (lux), color in (ii) CIE XY, LUV coordinates, and (iii) correlated color temperature. OPT4048 comes in a compact SOT-5X3 package.

Texas Instruments OPT4048 has an optional addressing scheme that enables up to four devices on a shared I2C bus. The spectral response of these channels is specially tuned to closely mimic the CIE tricolor spectrum, enabling ultra-accurate color detection. It also strongly inhibits wavelengths far from their respective peaks, particularly the NIR (850nm and 940nm) regions. These filters use advanced filtering technology to provide excellent filtering performance even at higher light incidence angles. The device has a high precision color detection function, supporting a variety of applications requiring accurate detection of ambient light color and color temperature.

Digital operations are flexible for system integration. The measurement can be measured continuously, or it can be triggered by a single register write or hardware pin. This device provides threshold detection logic, which allows the processor to go to sleep until the sensor detects an appropriate wake up event and reports it via an interrupt pin. A digital output that reports illuminance levels through a two-wire serial interface compatible with SMBus and I2C. The OPT4048 features both low power consumption and low supply voltage to help extend the battery life of battery-powered systems.
