Smart ultra-low power IMUs for wearable device applications

Bosch Sensortec has announced the launch of the BMI270, an ultra-low power intelligent inertial measurement unit (IMU) designed for wearable applications. It uses the latest Bosch MEMS process technology to greatly improve the offset and sensitivity performance of the accelerometer.

     Bosch Sensortec has announced the launch of the BMI270, an ultra-low power intelligent inertial measurement unit (IMU) designed for wearable applications. It uses the latest Bosch MEMS process technology to greatly improve the offset and sensitivity performance of the accelerometer.

 

     The BMI270 is the latest addition to the Bosch Sensortec BMI260 series of IMUs, including intuitive gesture, context and activity recognition, as well as an integrated plug-and-play pedometer optimized specifically for precise step counts in wrist-worn devices. Imus are also ideal for other types of wearables, such as listening devices, smart clothing, smart shoes, smart glasses, and ankle straps.

 

     By handling multiple activity tracking, step count, and gesture recognition functions independently of the main system processor without having to wake them up, the new IMU significantly extends system battery life. These processor-independent features include tasks such as sending interrupts when a certain number of steps are reached, or activating GPS via geofencing when the user stands up and starts walking.

 

     As a result, accurate and powerful gesture and activity recognition functions operate in ultra-low power domains with current consumption of only 30μA. This significantly reduces power consumption and users can benefit from longer battery charging intervals.
