Synergy S5 series microcontrollers for Industrial iot

Renesas Electronics announced the expansion of the highly integrated Renesas Synergy S5 family of microcontrollers (MCUS) with the introduction of the entry-level S5D3 MCU product group. The entry-level S5D3 series MCU is targeted at general-purpose industrial, building automation and office equipment, as well as smart metering and appliance applications with capacitive touch human machine interface (HMI).

     Renesas Electronics Corporation announced the expansion of the highly integrated Renesas Synergy S5 family of microcontrollers (MCUS) with the introduction of the entry-level S5D3 MCU product group. The four new S5D3-series MCUS have the same functionality as the S5 series (such as the mid-range S5D5 and high-end S5D9 series MCUS) - with a 120 MHz Arm® Cortex®-M4 core, integrated advanced security features, and a high level of security. It also comes with universal features that simplify the design of cost-sensitive, low-power Internet of Things (IoT) endpoint devices. The entry-level S5D3 series MCU is targeted at general-purpose industrial, building automation and office equipment, as well as smart metering and appliance applications with capacitive touch human machine interface (HMI).

 

     Renesas Synergy Software Package (SSP) supports S5D3 series MCUS to configure HAL drivers, application frameworks and real-time operating systems. Embedded system designers can use the Renesas Synergy development environment - e² studio or IAR Embedded Workbench - to build systems for custom design. Based on a 40nm process, the S5D3 series MCUS integrate a secure encryption engine (SCE7) and key protection, using the root of trust to protect the MCU startup code and communication security of iot endpoint devices.

 

     This feature eliminates the need for external safety functions, thereby reducing material costs. SCE7 uses encryption hardware accelerators such as RSA, DSA, AES, ECC, SHA and true random number generator (TRNG) to achieve secure cloud connection of the system. The power consumption level of each S5D3 series MCU is excellent, with 100 μA/MHz power consumption in active mode and only 1.3 μA in standby mode, and 900 nA VBATT power consumption while keeping the built-in real-time clock running continuously. These features make this family of MCUS ideal for low-power, high-performance applications.

 

     The S5D3 series MCUS are equipped with 512 KB flash memory and 256 KB SRAM memory with large capacity. This unique 2:1 ratio of built-in flash memory to SRAM supports frequent communication stack utilization, enabling reliable iot connectivity, and the 8KB data flash read/write cycle is superior to its peers. Each S5D3 MCU integrates multiple analog components, including two separate 12-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with three-way sampling hold, a 2-channel 12-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a high-speed 6-channel comparator, a temperature sensor, and a 6-channel programmable gain amplifier (PGA). The S5D3 series MCUS also come with a scalable set of 13 independent 32-bit universal timers and various communication interfaces such as USB, CAN, I2C, SPI, SDHI and SSI.

If customers need additional functionality, more memory, or higher performance in the future, the cost-optimized, pin-compatible S5D3 MCUS can be scaled up through the S5D5, S5D9, and S7G2 MCU product groups."
