TDK Corporation further expands its Flexield Permalloy film portfolio with the introduction of the new IPM01 series. The new product uses an ultra-thin (0.006 mm), lightweight design to achieve high permeability and loss. The new material can effectively block out low-frequency band noise, an increasingly common problem in electric vehicles. Mass production will begin in May 2024.
In recent years, more and more electronic subsystems have been used in conventional fuel vehicles for information, communication and navigation purposes. All such subsystems generate high-frequency noise in the megahertz (MHz) range. Although all such electronic subsystems are also integrated, electric vehicles no longer use internal combustion engines, replacing them with electric motors and inverters that produce lower frequency noise in the kilohertz range. Traditional noise suppression devices in the kilohertz band require heavy shielding materials, some of which also use metal. The problem, however, is that these materials are too large and bulky for electric vehicles, whose primary goal is to minimize size and weight.
The new IPM01 series is made of highly permeable Permalloy film sheets, which are more effective than traditional shielding materials and metal shielding to suppress low band noise while reducing the weight of the vehicle. Compared to traditional TDK products, the new series of products is approximately 80% thicker, 90% lighter and 65% more shielding [@1MHz].
In addition, the application scenarios of new permalloy materials are not limited to the automotive market. With the increasing miniaturization, thinness and versatility of electronic devices, the role of noise suppression is becoming increasingly important for devices such as smartphones. By using the Permalloy sheets developed by TDK, noise suppression can be achieved while reducing the thickness of the product to one-fifth of the thickness of conventional products.
