TDK Corporation has announced the launch of five new SMD multilayer varistors (MLVS). As an industry innovation, these components are designed to reduce their carbon footprint (CO2) while meeting stringent automotive certification requirements. These parts are the first representatives of TDK's new X series, which is expanding into automotive, industrial and consumer applications. The X Series meets both the growing demand for environmentally friendly products and the commercial requirements for cost-attractive products, while maintaining TDK's high reliability and performance.
The first five models are all certified for Automotive applications (AEC-Q200), and all belong to the X1 series, which is mainly used to protect the vehicle's engine management system, electronic control unit (ECU), airbag, anti-lock braking system (ABS). And the body stability control system (ESP) and other protection from the transient overvoltage of the battery line caused by events such as load throwing and lap starting. In addition, these components are equipped with electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection up to 30 kV according to IEC 61000-4-2 and meet the requirements of ISO 7637-2/16750-2 for automotive voltage pulses.
The new X1 series is available in four EIA package sizes (0603, 0805, 1206, and 1210) with a maximum RMS (AC) operating voltage of 14 V, 25 V, and 30 V, respectively, and a response time of 10 ps to 500 ps for transient voltages. These components can withstand inrush currents of 8/20 µs pulses (ranging from 5 A to 400 A), leakage currents of only 1 µA to 25 µA at rated DC voltage and room temperature, operating temperatures from -55 °C to +150 °C, and no derating is required even at high temperatures.
The X series is also continuing to expand and is expected to cover the full overvoltage protection needs of industrial and consumer electronics applications in the future. At the same time, the series also provides simulation models for PSpice.
