As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to expand in everyday products, it is becoming increasingly important to simplify software development for connected applications. Texas Instruments (TI) has announced a key upgrade to its entire Real-Time operating system (RTOS). The upgrade simplifies the use of embedded microcontroller-based (MCU) applications for power management within advanced operating systems such as Android and Windows. Therefore, with TI-RTOS 2.12, developers can easily leverage the power management features built into TI devices to create IoT applications with longer battery life.
The TI-RTOS 2.12, available as a free upgrade for adoption across TI's entire embedded processing portfolio, is designed to help developers focus on application differentiation and accelerate time to market with pre-built and tested connectivity stacks and drivers, while avoiding the need to write low-level code. This new RTOS version is a significant upgrade of the platform that debuted in 2012 and incorporates TI's more than 20 years of experience in providing product-quality OS solutions for real-time applications.
TI-RTOS 2.12 provides a standard set for multitasking, power management, and peripheral driver apis in all supported devices. This enables designers to migrate applications across different TI MCUS by running Ti-RTOS, reducing development time for the next generation of products. In addition, the newly upgraded platform provides TI Design Network with a free, widely available and patent-free software platform.
TI-RTOS 2.12 is now integrated with the Energia development environment. Energia and Arduino are based on Wiring frameworks that enable designers to quickly prototype applications without the need for extensive embedded experience. TI-RTOS 2.12 combines Energia's common and easy-to-use apis with new features like multithreading. This is an easy way to design multithreaded processing applications on TI's low-cost LaunchPad development kit, while leveraging common hardware abstraction layers.
