The establishment of the Taichung Zero Waste Manufacturing Center marks an important step in TSMC's sustainable manufacturing efforts. In addition, Taiwan's Ministry of Environment and TSMC signed a memorandum of understanding on carbon capture at the ceremony. The event was attended by representatives from government, academic institutions, industry associations and supply chain partners, as well as TSMC's green technology partners Changchun Petrochemical, transscene and Liying Environmental Technology.
TSMC is committed to establishing global standards for sustainability, leveraging innovative technologies to strengthen environmental initiatives and improve resource recovery, while maintaining a harmonious relationship with the Earth's ecosystems. The Zero Waste Manufacturing Center in Taiwan, the most advanced integrated energy and resource recovery facility in the global semiconductor industry, has also been designated as TSMC's first circular economy demonstration Center.
Taichung Zero Waste Manufacturing Center is committed to implementing the principles of waste reduction and environmental benefits while reducing risks. It is equipped with four important recycling facilities: solvothermal recovery, isopropyl alcohol recovery, silica recovery and fluoride recovery. These facilities ensure that waste resources are properly disposed of. Since its trial operation began in 2023, the center has successfully purified and recycled chemicals, meeting the standards for recycled products. These chemicals are being developed into electronic-grade quality that can be reused in semiconductor processes, reducing the need for raw material extraction and opening up a new model for the circular economy. They apply to other industries as well.
When operating at full capacity, the Taichung Zero Waste Manufacturing Center has the potential to reduce TSMC's outsourced waste treatment by 130,000 tons per year. This reduced the total amount of waste generated by TSMC's facilities in the Central Taiwan Science Park by more than 85 percent. According to environmental Profit and loss (EP&L) accounting, this reduction saves approximately NT $1.5 billion in environmental costs per year. This includes 40,000 tons of carbon reduction benefits, equivalent to the carbon offset of more than 110 Da 'a forest parks.
Taichung Zero Waste Manufacturing Center has become the first demonstration site in Taiwan to apply membrane carbon capture technology to achieve net-zero emissions. TSMC and Japan's Ministry of Environment have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly advance the technology, which will be implemented in general waste heat treatment (incineration) facilities. This novel carbon reduction strategy aims to enhance and amplify sustainable impact.
