Teledyne e2v has announced the release of a 16-core engineering prototype of the Arm®Cortex® A72-based system-on-chip (SoC) processor LX2160-Space, enabling early project design and hardware and software validation for demanding aerospace applications. The engineering sample of the LX2160-Space has the same size/form factor/function as the Flight positive film (FM).
LX2160-Space can be used for many heavy-duty computational aerospace applications, from Earth observation satellites to early warning systems and telecommunications, including data processing in 5G NTN (non-terrestrial network) satellite communications (SatCom). With 200k DMIPS performance, the processor is also suitable for computant-intensive data and image processing tasks. It integrates a wealth of peripherals and is highly efficient, with a power consumption of about 2W per core, providing excellent performance for embedded engineers with a small form factor and optimized power envelope.
The LX2160 benefits from Teledyne e2v's more than 40 years of experience and history in digital processing solutions in the field of high reliability, first on PowerPC processors and now on Arm®. Today, the company announced the Arm® based LX2160, a fully military standard device. The associated LX2160-Space is currently under development. Radiation resistance tests are also being conducted, and some reports have been made available to customers. Teledyne e2v plans to release a range of radiation-resistant aerospace options to NASA Level 1 in the second half of 2025.
Thomas Guillemain, Marketing and Business Development Manager, Data Processing Systems, said: "We are very proud to release the engineering prototype of the LX2160-Space, which is a milestone as we have seen tremendous user interest in the device. In fact, with telecommunications satellites having to process more packets at higher speeds, Earth observation satellites requiring processing of higher sensor resolution and faster frame rates, and the ever-increasing amount of data required to perform on-board autonomous decisions, such as running artificial intelligence algorithms, LX2160-Space is the right processing chip for aerospace applications."
