Texas Instruments has introduced the first integrated circuit (IC) developed with a new proprietary integrated transformer technology: the UCC12050, a 500mW highly efficient isolated DC/DC converter with the industry's lowest electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Texas Instruments has introduced the first integrated circuit (IC) developed with a new proprietary integrated transformer technology: the UCC12050, a 500mW highly efficient isolated DC/DC converter with the industry's lowest electromagnetic interference (EMI). Its height of 2.65mm enables designers to reduce the size of the solution (80% compared to discrete solutions and 60% compared to power modules) and is twice as efficient as competing devices. Designed for industrial performance, the UCC12050's 5kVrms enhanced isolation and 1.2kVrms operating voltage prevent high voltage spikes in systems such as industrial transportation, grid infrastructure, and medical devices. TI's breakthrough integrated transformer technology enables high density isolated DC/DC power conversion while maintaining low EMI. The single-package, surface-mount architecture gives designers an easy-to-use, low-profile integrated circuit that reduces the bill of materials (BOM) and operates efficiently over a wide temperature range. EMI optimization, low capacitance transformers, and silent control solutions simplify EMI compliance while providing a reliable solution with the choice of enhanced or basic isolation.

 

Key features and benefits of UCC12050

Small size and increased power density: The UCC12050 comes in a 16-pin small form factor integrated circuit (SOIC) package with a size of 10.3 mm x 10.3 mm x 2.65 mm, providing 60% efficiency, twice as much as competing devices of similar size and double the power density of the relative isolated power module. Using 0.5W in the new architecture improves reliability, reduces the bill of materials, and simplifies the board layout.

 

Lower EMI: The UCC12050's integrated transformer with lower primary to secondary capacitors optimizes EMI performance, and its silent control scheme makes it easier for engineers to get their designs through the International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) 32 Class B EMI test, as it allows for margin on two layers of printed circuit boards. This solution also eliminates external filter components that typically need to meet EMI certification, such as low-voltage differential regulators and ferrite beads, significantly reducing component selection and design time.

 

Enhanced isolation, wide temperature range: The enhanced isolation of the UCC12050 with 8mm creep and clearance is used to protect and resist ground potential differences. Its high efficiency and wide operating temperature range (-40°C to 125°C) provide more power under extreme conditions.
