Texas Instruments introduces a new stack DC/DC buck converter

     Texas Instruments introduces the industry's first new 40-A SWIFT DC/DC buck converter that can stack up to four integrated circuits (ics). The TPS546D24A PMBus buck converter delivers up to 160A output current at ambient temperatures of 85°C, four times higher than other power ics on the market. Among the many 40A DC/DC converters, the TPS546D24A is more efficient, reducing power consumption by 1.5W in high-performance data centers, enterprise computing, medical, wireless infrastructure, and wired networking applications.

     Texas Instruments (TI) today introduced the industry's first new 40-A SWIFT DC/DC buck converter that can stack up to four integrated circuits (ics). The TPS546D24A PMBus buck converter delivers up to 160A output current at ambient temperatures of 85°C, four times higher than other power ics on the market. Among the many 40A DC/DC converters, the TPS546D24A is more efficient, reducing power consumption by 1.5W in high-performance data centers, enterprise computing, medical, wireless infrastructure, and wired networking applications.

     In addition, the TPS546D24A has a low thermal resistance of 8.1°C/W, which is 13°C lower than other DC/DC converters on the market, thus improving the reliability of electronic products such as baseband units and automated test equipment in high temperatures and harsh environments.

     The use of DC/DC converters with high switching frequencies can reduce the space occupied by the power supply and facilitate the design of high bandwidth systems. The inductance and capacitance of the TPS546D24A are one-third smaller than comparable converters, enabling switching frequencies of 1.5MHz and providing 40A of current per integrated circuit. To reduce the negative impact of high switching frequencies on work efficiency, the TPS546D24A incorporates a 0.9mΩ low-side MOSFET, making it 3.5% more efficient than other DC/DC buck converters on the market.

     Fpgas are widely used, but engineers designing power supplies for them are often surprised by the voltage accuracy required to support FPGA DC voltage rails. The TPS546D24A can achieve an output voltage error of less than 1%, helping engineers more easily meet these stringent voltage tolerances. In addition, its extensive PMBus instruction set and pin reuse configurability also allow engineers to achieve more accurate current monitoring in order to provide timely fault reports and avoid over-design.
