Texas Instruments introduces the industry's smaller step-boost battery charger integrated circuit

     Texas Instruments introduces the industry's smaller step-boost battery charger integrated circuit that integrates power path management for higher power density, universal and fast charging with up to 97% charging efficiency. The BQ25790 and BQ25792 support efficient charging of USB Type-C™ and USB Power Delivery (PD) ports in small personal electronics, portable medical devices, and building automation applications, and reduce static standby current by 10 times.

     The BQ25790 and BQ25792 provide the flexibility to charge from one battery to four batteries, while being compatible with USB Type-C and USB PD input standards, with charging currents up to 5 A over the entire input voltage range (3.6V to 24V). The charger's integrated dual input selector supports a wide range of power sources including wireless, USB, barrel jacks and solar charging while providing fast charging - up to 97% efficiency at 30 W.

     Universal charging enables portable medical devices, such as blood pressure monitors and low-power continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, to be charged via an onboard adapter or USB-PD adapter, bringing greater flexibility and convenience to portable medical devices. Mobile (OTG) charging is supported through the forward and reverse bidirectional operation of the charging IC.

     The charger offers a power density of 155 mW/mm2 (100 W/in2), which is about twice higher than the market. The new step-up charger helps engineers reduce solution size and bill of materials (BOM) and is the first TI device to fully integrate the following components: switching metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET), charge path management FETs, input current and charge current detection circuits, and dual-input select drivers. The reduction in the number of components is valuable for applications such as smart speakers; Moreover, as market adoption increases, the size and cost of these applications continue to shrink.

     The BQ25790 and BQ25792 are TI's first multi-cell step-boost battery chargers with static current below 1 µA. The static current is reduced by up to ten times through transport mode and shutdown function, and the battery standby time provided is at least five times higher than the market. Combined with the extremely low 8mΩ battery FET resistance, engineers can further extend battery operating time. For example, when the main power supply is switched to the battery pack, the normal operation of the video doorbell, which usually relies on AC power supply, can be guaranteed. TI's charger helps reduce power consumption by dissipating heat, which makes the video doorbell's battery last longer.
