Texas Instruments introduces the system base chip with integrated CAN FD controller and transceiver

     Texas Instruments TCAN4550 and TCAN4550-Q1 CAN FD controllers. The TCAN4550 device supports data transfer rates of up to 5Mbps and SPI clock speeds of up to 18 MHz, and is the industry's first system-based chip to integrate a CAN FD controller and transceiver. These highly integrated controllers are suitable for building automation, industrial transport and factory automation, and the TCAN4550-Q1 version is AEC-Q100 certified for automotive applications.

     The TCAN4550 controller has differential transmission capability to transmit to the bus, and differential reception capability to receive from the bus. These controllers have a wide CAN bus operating range, including ±42 V bus fault protection and ±12 V common mode. These chips use the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) to provide an interface between the system processor and the CAN bus, supporting both CAN FD and classic CAN.

     The TCAN4550 controller has multiple operating modes, including standby and sleep, with low power consumption through the use of wake up and suppress functions. These controllers are able to support the bandwidth and data flexibility requirements of the on-board network, implementing the CAN FD interface on the system using the SPI bus of almost any microcontroller.

     The TCAN4550 controller also has an accompanying TCAN4550EVM evaluation module, which can be connected to any microcontroller or SPI controller with an I/O voltage of 3.3V or 5V using a standard interface plug. The TCAN4550EVM features EMC filtering and polar-protected supply voltage and is capable of operating with external voltages from 6 V to 24 V.
