The AMS Vegas RGB laser module is available, 0.7cm ³ Optical engine makes smart glasses lighter

     Ams has unveiled a new prototype of its Vegalas laser emitter module, which will halve the size of its projection optical engine using the model's augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) smart glasses. Emais Osram's innovations in optical component technology have reduced many of the restrictions on smart glasses design, making smart glasses as light and stylish as the ordinary glasses and sunglasses that consumers buy every day.

     At present, the market of AR or MR Smart glasses is mainly in the field of industrial or professional applications. This is because the components such as the optical engine or battery of the projection are difficult to be portable, large in size and heavy in weight, and need a strong frame as a support. Some in the industry believe that smart glasses are the next generation of mobile computing technology that will replace the smartphone. For manufacturers to provide smart glasses that consumers are happy with, they will have to drastically reduce the size and weight without compromising image quality and brightness.The new Vegalas™ module prototype reduces the optical engine size of smart glasses to 0.7cm³ for standard consumer frames.

     The design of the Emmas Osram Vegalas module combines red (640nm), green (520nm) and blue (450nm) lasers in a surface-mount package that is tightly sealed to protect the chip from contamination or degradation. The size area of the module is 7.0mm × 4.6mm, and the thickness is 1.2mm. The Vegalas module is expected to begin mass production in the first half of 2023. Sample quantity is limited at present.

     Ams has formed a partnership with members of the LaSAR Alliance (lasaralliance.org), Provides the design for the projection light engine of the Vegalas™ module-based laser scanning system (LBS), combining MEMS mirror modules from STMicroelectronics and waveguide displays from Finnish optical manufacturer Dispelix. At 10mm x 11mm x 6mm (0.7cm3), the new engine is about 60% smaller than the LBS engine based on three separate Emis OSram TO38 laser EMitters, which has a volume of 1.7cm³.

     In addition to optical engine lasers for projection, Emais Osram offers a comprehensive portfolio of optical products that support many other features for AR applications, which include infrared leds and eye-tracking sensors, ambient light sensors, and sensor components for applications such as room scanning, proximity sensing, and indoor positioning.
