The CHIPS of Europe project aims to tackle the worker shortfall in the semiconductor industry of the European Union (EU). Over the next four years, there will be a collaborative effort between industry and academia to enhance the appeal of study programs and job opportunities associated to semiconductors.
Prof. Klaus Kreulich, Vice-Rector for Teaching Affairs at Munich University of Applied Sciences, highlights the significance of academic expertise for the microchip industry and Europe’s economic prosperity, as demonstrated by the recent achievements in generative AI. The initiative has coincided with the perfect timing.
The EU semiconductor industry has experienced a heightened demand for trained people due to the fresh investments facilitated by the EU Chips Act. Without any intervention, the European Union's semiconductor sector will confront a deficit of 350,000 employees by the year 2030.
CHIPS of Europe will increase the attractiveness of semiconductor-related study programs and careers. It brings together large companies and small and medium-sized enterprises, such as Infineon, Imec, X-Fab, Cadence, nextnano GmbH, and universities. The project includes partners from fascinating application fields such as medical and space which touch on the hearts and minds of future workforce.
The project consists of 14 full partners and 7 associated partners from 10 countries in Europe. It utilizes specific measures to achieve its goals and aims to have a lasting impact on the semiconductor ecosystem in Europe. It will offer a revised curriculum and micro-credentials on advanced subjects in chip design, manufacturing, and packaging. Novel pedagogical approaches, including the establishment of summer schools at fabrication facilities and the creation of virtual laboratories, will be implemented to enhance understanding of the dynamic field of semiconductors.
CHIPS of Europe will establish a comprehensive talent pipeline that begins at secondary schools to minimize any potential loss. Targeted initiatives will be implemented to enhance the proportion of female students in technical disciplines. Hence, it is crucial to provide additional resources to instructors serving as mentors and to foster collaboration with female representatives from industry and academia as exemplary figures. An academic partner from Africa is being incorporated to enhance Europe’s talent pool. Public communications are used to promote positive awareness of semiconductors in all activities.
CHIPS of Europe aims to develop a robust network connecting industry, universities, and schools to provide the necessary higher education for Europe’s digital decade.
