
Renesas Electronics Corporation announced the introduction of the industry's first booster battery charger with invertible USB Type-C connector cables for narrow-voltage DC charging (NVDC) and hybrid Power booster (HPBB) charging for laptops, ultrabooks, tablets and mobile power supplies.
The ISL9241 provides firmware controlled switching between NVDC and HPBB modes, providing a low-cost, small charging solution that efficiently handles various power levels. The device utilizes Renesas Electronics' advanced R3™ modulation technology to achieve superior light-load efficiency, ultra-fast transient response and extended battery life. The charger can be reconfigured with internal registers to enable a smaller inductor in HPBB mode, increasing efficiency across multiple power levels.
The ISL9241 features charging, system voltage regulation and protection with NFET for maximum efficiency and optimized bill of Materials (BOM) costs. The charger can operate with only the battery, only the adapter, or with both the battery and the adapter connected. It uses a conventional adapter, a travel adapter, and a USB Type-C PD port as DC input power and safely charges up to four lithium battery packs. In NVDC mode, the ISL9241 can automatically select an adapter or battery as the system power supply. NVDC also supports Turbo mode, which switches on a BGATE FET to limit adapter current when the adapter current reaches a set point. NVDC is the initial startup state of ISL9241 before the system controller firmware is configured to HPBB. In high-power HPBB mode, the ISL9241 supports bypass, bypass plus charge, reverse Turbo boost mode, and reverse Turbo boost plus charge mode.
The ISL9241 offers 5V to 20V reverse buck, boost or boost charging (OTG mode) for the adapter port. This makes it easy to configure a USB-C PD output that supports a fast charging Programmable Power Supply (PPS) port. In PPS mode, the ISL9241 can also be charged directly via bypass. The ISL9241's reconfigurable architecture enables designers to leverage the charger to support multi-port configurations while being fully compatible with the USB PD3.0 standard. The ISL9241 offers a variety of digital telemetry, fault detection and protection functions. In addition, it has a supplemental power mode that allows input capacitors to store energy and release it when needed to support the system's high power demands.

The ISL9241 can be used with the ISL95338 lift voltage regulator, R9A02G011 USB PD controller or R9J02G012 USB PD controller, and the RAJ240045 coulometer IC. Form a complete USB-C PD3.0 and battery charger solution.

● Trickle charge for deeply discharged batteries
● SMBus/I2C allows the main parameters to be programmed to provide optimized solutions
● Support for battery transport mode to keep IC in ultra-low power state
