The new InnoMux technology increases the efficiency of the display power supply

Power Integrations releases InnoMux chipsets for display power supplies. The chipset features a unique single-stage power architecture that reduces the power consumption level for display applications and increases the overall efficiency of the constant-voltage and constant-current LED backlight driver circuit by 50% compared to conventional power solutions, resulting in a power efficiency of 91%. In addition, TV and display designers can reduce the number of components by more than 50 percent, thereby reducing manufacturing costs while enhancing the reliability of the power supply board.

     Power Integrations releases InnoMux chipsets for display power supplies. The chipset features a unique single-stage power architecture that reduces the power consumption level for display applications and increases the overall efficiency of the constant-voltage and constant-current LED backlight driver circuit by 50% compared to conventional power solutions, resulting in a power efficiency of 91%. In addition, TV and display designers can reduce the number of components by more than 50 percent, thereby reducing manufacturing costs while enhancing the reliability of the power supply board.

 

     The new chipset includes an InnoMux controller IC and an InnoSwitch™3-MX isolated switching IC. InnoSwitch3-MX is the latest addition to the Power Integrations flyback switching IC product family, which integrates a primary FET, a primary side controller, a secondary side controller for synchronous rectifier, and FluxLink™ high-speed communication technology that eliminates the need for an optocoupler. InnoSwitch3-MX receives control information from the InnoMux IC, which measures the load requirements of each output individually and instructs the switching operation of InnoSwitch3-MX to provide the appropriate power to each output to maintain the accuracy of current or voltage adjustment.

 

     This eliminates the load and cross-adjustment challenges common in conventional multioutput power supplies, eliminating the need for a post-stage regulator circuit. A 10% increase in overall power conversion efficiency eliminates heat sinks and overheated hot spots, while easily meeting the upcoming ENERGY STAR®8.0 display standard and the latest CEC power consumption standard scheduled to take effect in July 2019.

 

     InnoMux technology is unique in that it supports both precisely adjusted constant current and constant voltage outputs, enabling control of one to four constant flow channels and up to two constant voltage outputs. This flexibility meets the logic, audio, and LED power requirements common in televisions and displays. The IC provides overload protection for each output. InnoMux technology also supports the complex dimming applications required for LED constant current output, including analog dimming and PWM dimming, as well as alternate and hybrid dimming with dedicated analog and PWM control pins to achieve dimming amplitude down to 1.5%.

 

     Edward Ong, Product Marketing Manager at Power Integrations, said: "Developers can take advantage of InnoMux's power conversion efficiency in two ways: "They can develop high-efficiency displays and televisions to meet manufacturer specification targets and regional ENERGY efficiency regulations, or they can reduce light efficiency requirements by using low-cost leds and simpler and cheaper diffusers to reduce the cost of display panels while still meeting the upcoming ENERGY STAR 8.0 standard."

 

     Now, Power Integrations has developed two reference designs associated with the new product - the DER-635 and the DER-636. The DER-636 is a 40 W display power supply with one constant voltage output and four constant current outputs. The DER-635 is a 45 W TV application power supply that provides 2 constant voltage outputs and 1 constant current output.
