The new hybrid surge protection provides multi-mode protection in a compact design

     Bourns, a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, has announced the launch of the Bourns 1202 series. This Type 1 hardwired hybrid surge protector (SPD) is designed for AC infrastructure applications. Burns engineers have combined the company's fast-responding metal oxide rheostat (MOV) technology with low-leakage gas discharge tube (GDT) technology to provide a consistent, long-life, reliable and enhanced protective device. The Model 1202 series features a full multimode protection scheme and can be used in line-to-line, line-to-neutral and neutral-to-ground configurations.

     The innovative hybrid design uses GDT to isolate the MOV from line voltage, thereby protecting it from transient and temporary overvoltage spikes that can damage the MOV over time. The GDT's ultra-low leakage also helps reduce damage due to watt-loss heating.

     Model 1202 has a rated current of 10 kA and a short circuit current of 25 kA. When the surge protector encounters any situation that requires an internal safety fuse to activate, the device's LED indicator provides visual indication. In addition, the series is IP66/NEMA 4x rated and can be used indoors or outdoors. As a Type 1 surge protector, the Type 1202 surge protector does not require an external line fuse or circuit breaker and can be placed on the line side of the main service circuit breaker.

     Bourns' latest hybrid SPD has a wide range of features that make it an optimal solution to protect against lightning threats, reach its rated limits, and address issues caused by AC power in applications such as service intakes, branch and OEM panels, electrical infrastructure, and equipment and system cabinets.
