STMicroelectronics, the world's leading semiconductor company serving multiple electronic applications, has announced that two USB Powered (USB PD) Extended Power Range (EPR) chips have received USB-IF(USB Developer Forum) certification. These two chips are used on the adapter side (power supply) and the device side (power received) of the power supply/charger, extending the output range of the universal charger to 140W. Today, a single AC-DC adapter can charge most electric devices, such as computers, smart home actuators, power tools, electric bicycles, and traditional charging products, such as mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches.
Matteo Lo Presti, Executive Vice President, Analog, MEMS and Sensor Products Division, STMicroelectronics, said: "ST is a pioneer in the semiconductor industry and is now able to provide USB-IF certified reference designs and chips that meet customers' demands for high-power, industry-standard universal chargers/adapters. "By responding quickly, supporting USB-powered EPRs, and gaining product certification, we are accelerating the push for USB-C® connectors to replace custom power plugs and DC adapters in numerous applications with universal AC or DC adapters for charging, reducing cost and environmental impact."
With USB-IF certified power output up to 140W(28V@5A), REF_STUSB140W(powered chip) and ST-ONEHP (powered chip) are the two halves of the overall reference design for USB PD. Powered reference design ensures designers access to cost-effective prototyping solutions with high energy efficiency and seamless integration of USB PD. The ST-ONEHP chip comes pre-loaded with the certified USB PD 3.1 EPR firmware.
"The USB PD 3.1 specification represents a major technological breakthrough to meet the charging needs of more than 100W devices," said Jeff Ravencraft, president and COO of USB-IF. As one of the first USB-IF certified USB PD EPR reference designs, ST's latest IC will accelerate power's transition from proprietary power connectors to USB Type-C®."
As an active participant in the USB PD 3.1 specification and the Extended Power Range (EPR) definition, stmicroelectronics was one of the first semiconductor manufacturers to be certified. Overall, the new USB solution helps advance the wider use of USB-C connectors, charging with a common AC-DC adapter, which will reduce the number of adapters and e-waste carried around by end users, as well as reducing shipping costs and CO2 emissions.
