The Texas Instruments BQ25150 is a highly integrated battery charge management IC that integrates common features of wearable devices, including a charger, output voltage rail, ADC for battery and system monitoring, and a push button controller.
The BQ25150 IC integrates a linear charger for fast and accurate charging of small batteries. The device supports maximum charging current up to 500 mA and termination current up to 0.5 mA. The battery uses a standard lithium-ion charging configuration consisting of three stages of pre-charge, constant current and constant voltage regulation.
The device integrates advanced power path management and control, allowing the device to provide power to the system while charging, even if the adapter is poor. The host can control the power path through I(2)C, allowing it to disconnect input adapters and/or batteries without actually removing them. A single button input eliminates the need for a separate button controller IC, reducing the total solution footprint. Button input can be used for wake function or reset system.
The 12-bit effective ADC enables accurate battery voltage monitoring and can be used to enable low I(Q) measurements to monitor battery health. It can also be used to measure battery temperature using a thermistor connected to the TS pin and an external system signal through a pin. Low static current during operation and shutdown maximizes battery life. Input current limits, charging current, LDO output voltage and other parameters are programmable through the I(2)C interface, making the BQ25150 a very flexible charging solution. Includes a voltage-based JEitA-compatible (or standard hot/cold) battery pack thermistor monitoring input (TS) that monitors the battery temperature and automatically changes the charging parameters to prevent the battery from charging beyond its safe temperature range.
The temperature threshold is programmable through I(2)C, allowing the host to customize the hot charge profile. The charger is optimized for 5 V USB input and 20v absolute maximum tolerance line transients. The device incorporates a linear regulator to provide a quiet track for the radio or processor and can be independently sourced and controlled via I(2)C.
