Toshiba announced the launch of the 16TB MG08 series of hard drives

     Toshiba announced the launch of the MG08 series of conventional Magnetic Recording technology (CMR) hard drives with the industry's largest capacity of 16TB. Compatible with the widest range of applications and operating systems, the MG08 16TB hard drive offers 33% more capacity than today's widely adopted 12TB hard drives and 14% more capacity than previous 14TB models for hybrid random read and write and sequential read and write workloads in cloud and traditional data center environments

     The MG08 series is Toshiba's second generation of helium-sealed hard drives and eighth generation of enterprise capacity class hard drives. Toshiba uses the 9-disc helium-sealed hard drive design, introduced last year in the 14TB model, and its own advanced precision laser welding process to ensure that helium is securely sealed inside the drive housing, achieving an industry-leading 16TB capacity and higher power efficiency. The MG08 operates at 7,200rpm, has a rated annual load capacity of up to 550TB, an average time to failure (MTTF) of 2.5 million hours , features 512 MIB cache buffers and a variety of SATA and SAS interfaces - all in the industry standard 3.5 " form factor.

     The MG08 series also further demonstrates Toshiba's commitment to continually push HDD designs to meet the growing demand for storage devices in cloud-scale servers and storage infrastructure. With data growing at an explosive rate, the industry-leading 16TB CMR storage capacity will help cloud scale service providers and storage solution designers achieve higher storage density in cloud, hybrid cloud and on-premises rack-scale storage. With 16TB of storage capacity and higher power efficiency, the MG08 series will help reduce the total cost of ownership for storage infrastructure such as data protection, big data aggregation, content services and data archiving.
