
Toshiba Electronic Components and Storage Devices, Inc. (announced the launch of the 18TB MG09 series hard disk Drive (HDD), Toshiba's first HDD with energy-assisted magnetic recording. The MG09 series uses Toshiba's third-generation 9-disc helium seal design and Toshiba's innovative flux control-Microwave-assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) technology to increase the traditional magnetic recording (CMR) density to 2TB per disk for a total capacity of 18TB.
Compared to the previous generation 16TB model, the 18TB MG09 CMR has a 12.5% increase in hard disk capacity and is compatible with an extremely wide range of applications and operating systems. The MG09 is suitable for mixed random and sequential read and write workloads in cloud scale and traditional data center use cases. The MG09 features a 7,200rpm performance, a 550TB per year workload rating, and SATA and SAS interface options, all in an energy-efficient helium seal industry standard 3.5 " specification.
The MG09 series further illustrates Toshiba's commitment to advancing HDD design to meet the evolving needs of storage devices in cloud-scale servers and object and file storage infrastructures. With higher energy efficiency and 18TB capacity, the MG09 series helps cloud-scale infrastructure increase storage density, thereby reducing capital expenditure and improving total cost of ownership (TCO). As data continues to explode, the advanced 18TB MG09 with FC-MAMR technology will help cloud service providers and storage solution designers achieve higher cloud, hybrid cloud and on-premises rack-level storage densities.
