Toshiba introduced intelligent grid driven optocoupler, which helps simplify the peripheral circuit design of power devices

     Toshiba Electronic Components and Memory announced the expansion of its Smart gate driven optocoupler product line with the introduction of the "TLP5222" smart gate driven optocoupler with an output current of 2.5A. This is an isolated gate drive IC that can provide overcurrent protection for power devices such as MOSFET or IGBT, with built-in protection operation automatic recovery function.

     The TLP5222 continuously monitors the drain-source voltage (VDS) [1] or collector-emitter voltage (VCE) [2] of the power device it drives. The built-in overcurrent detection and protection function detects any VDS or VCE rise due to overcurrent in the power device and performs a soft shutdown.

     In addition, the new optocoupler has a built-in automatic recovery function that resets the optocoupler to normal operation at 25.5μs (typical value) after triggering the protection operation. This simplifies the sequence setup in the controller. It also incorporates an isolated fault state feedback function that sends a fault signal to the controller once an overcurrent is detected, while an active Miller clamp function prevents short circuits in the upper and lower arm power components [3], helping to simplify the design and reduce external circuits.

     The TLP5222, meanwhile, is packaged in SO16L to ensure a minimum creepage distance and electrical clearance of 8mm, making it suitable for devices that require high insulation performance. In addition, its rated operating temperature range is -40 ° C to 110 ° C, suitable for a variety of applications in harsh temperature environments, such as photovoltaic power systems and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
