Toshiba introduces 30V n-channel common drain MOSFETs for devices with USB as well as battery pack protection

     Toshiba Electronic Components and Storage Corporation announced the launch of the "SSM10N961L" low-on-resistance 30Vn-channel common drain MOSFET for devices with USB and for battery pack protection. So far, Toshiba's N-channel common-drain MOSFET product line has focused on 12V products, mainly for the protection of lithium-ion battery packs in smartphones. The release of the 30V product provides a wider range of options for applications with voltages higher than 12V, such as load switches for the power lines of USB charging devices and lithium-ion battery pack protection for laptops and tablets.

     Implementing a bidirectional switch with a low drain-source on-resistance (RDS(ON)) requires two MOSFETs with low RDS(ON), with a size of 3.3 mmI3.3 mm or 2mmI2mm. Toshiba's new product comes in a new compact, thin package, TCSPAG-341501 (3.37 MMI 1.47mm (typical), thickness = 0.11mm (typical)), with a source-to-source on-resistance (RSS(ON) of 9.9mΩ (typical) in a single package common drain structure.

     USB PD (USB Power Delivery) has been developed specifically for devices that require high power supply and can provide power from 15W (5V/3A) up to 240W (48V/5A). USB PD has a role exchange function that supports the exchange of the power side and the receiving side, requiring the USB charging device to be able to supply power bidirectionally so that it can support both power transmission and power reception. The new product is an N-channel common drain MOSFET that supports two-way power supply and has a small surface area.

     Combining this product with a driver IC from the Toshiba TCK42xG family can form a load switch circuit with backflow protection or a power multiplexer circuit that can switch operation between make-before-break (MBB) and make-before-break (BBM). Based on this portfolio, Toshiba today released a reference design for power multiplexer circuits (using common drain MOSFETs). Using this reference design helps to reduce product design and development time.
