Toshiba launches power factor correction (PFC) circuits for large power supplies for air conditioning and industrial equipment

     Toshiba Electronics Components and Storage announced the launch of a 650V discrete IGBT- "GT30J65MRB" - for power factor correction (PFC) circuits used in large power supplies for air conditioners and industrial equipment.

 

     Power semiconductor devices are proven by the industry to be important for energy conservation efforts, including helping to achieve carbon neutrality goals. Demand for high-efficiency switching devices is also growing due to the increasing use of frequency converters in high-power industrial equipment and household appliances, such as air conditioners, and the need to reduce power consumption in large power supplies for industrial equipment. This has led to the need for lower loss switching devices and higher switching frequencies in PFC circuits.

 

     Toshiba has introduced the latest technology in its new IGBT. The optimized groove construction ensures an industry-leading low switching loss (turn-off loss) of 0.35mJ (typical value), approximately 42% less than Toshiba's current GT50JR22. In addition, the new IGBT includes a built-in diode with a forward voltage of 1.2V (typical), which is approximately 43% lower than the GT50JR22. These improvements contribute to a significant increase in equipment efficiency.

 

     For air conditioning PFC circuits using Toshiba's current product GT50JR22, the operating frequency is below 40kHz. The GT30J65MRB is Toshiba's first IGBT for PFCS up to 60kHz, which ensures higher operating frequencies by reducing switching loss (turn-off loss).
