Transphorm partners with Weltrend Semiconductor to introduce gallium nitride system-level packaging devices

Transphorm, a leading global supplier of gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductors, and Weltrend Semiconductor, a global leader in integrated circuits for adaptor USB-C PD controllers, announced a collaboration to launch a 100-watt USB-C PD power adapter reference design. The reference design circuit uses the system-level package (SiP) SuperGaN power control chip WT7162RHUG24A, developed jointly by the two companies, to achieve 92.2% efficiency in a quasi-resonant flyback (QRF) topology.

     Transphorm, a leading global supplier of gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductors, and Weltrend Semiconductor, a global leader in integrated circuits for adaptor USB-C PD controllers, announced a collaboration to launch a 100-watt USB-C PD power adapter reference design. The reference design circuit uses the system-level package (SiP) SuperGaN power control chip WT7162RHUG24A, developed jointly by the two companies, to achieve 92.2% efficiency in a quasi-resonant flyback (QRF) topology.

 

     This reference design is the second QRF Topology USB-C PD adapter control board from Weltrend Semiconductor to use the WT7162RHUG24A. Earlier this year, Weltrend Semiconductor released a 65-watt adapter control circuit. Using the same SuperGaN SiP for both adapter panels, customers are able to achieve economies of scale with a 100 watt product design at a better cost than competing solutions. This also shows that the 65-watt SuperGaN SiP also meets the performance and thermal requirements of the 100-watt design.

 

     Philip Zuk, Transphorm's senior vice president of Business Development and marketing, said: "Gallium nitride-based integrated circuits can simplify design, the idea is great, but it has to be 'integrated', it has to be a single integrated device with the necessary controller inside the package. This is where Weltrend Semiconductor and Transphorm's SuperGaN SiP come in. Our system-level packages are simple, normally closed solutions that do not require protection of circuits, drivers or external controllers. In addition, the same SiP is also available for 65-watt and 100-watt power adapters. Products and solutions with these highlights truly demonstrate the comprehensive performance benefits and robustness inherent in gallium nitride. Currently, this is only possible with Transphorm's SuperGaN platform."
