U-blox launches globally configurable NB-IoT modules for 3GPP Rel 14 and 5G

     U-blox Corporation has announced the launch of the multi-band NB-IoT module SARA-N3, which supports the initial 3GPP Release 14 feature set (LTE Cat NB2). SARA-N3 is available in two models: one for use in China and one that can be used across bands in any NB-IoT network worldwide.

     The u-blox Firmware over the Air (uFOTA) client/server solution with lightweight M2M(LwM2M) allows SARA-N3 to provide additional functionality remotely. LwM2M is a lighter weight solution than Open Mobile Alliance Device Management (OMA-DM), making it ideal for providing critical firmware updates to IoT devices. In this way, SARA-N3 can eventually be compatible with 5G. SARA-N3 also supports the creation of dynamic LwM2M objects, providing customers with a high level of functionality customization by writing their own configurable objects.

     Samuele Falcomer, Senior Product Manager, u-blox Cellular Product Center, said: "With the rich functionality of SARA-N3, we can develop one device in multiple regions for a variety of IoT/IIoT applications, such as metering, smart city systems, smart home and industrial trackers. For customers who currently use other methods such as traditional cellular technology to send IoT/IIoT data, upgrading to SARA-N3 with the u-blox nested design and new features introduced is simple. The product is forward-looking and can receive more firmware upgrades in the air."

     SARA-N3 provides a complete set of features and protocols for NB-Iot-based applications, including TCP, HTTPS, CoAP, DTLS and MQTT. The module features ultra-low power consumption, configurable voltage domains, and optimized battery life of more than 10 years without frequent maintenance. Other features include the 'last gasp', which sends a final message in the event of an unexpected power failure to prevent software attacks by detecting potential interference signals.

     U-blox is manufactured according to ISO/TS16949 professional grade specifications. The method includes 100% automatic X-ray and optical inspection, 100% output testing and product traceability. Combined with fault analysis and product certification standards, ensure the production of highly reliable products that can run for a long time.
