
U-blox Corporation has announced the launch of the ZED-F9T high precision timing module. The module can even meet the most demanding timing synchronization requirements in 5G mobile networks worldwide. Although the previous generation of cellular networks has used GNSS time as the primary synchronization source, only better synchronization across the network will be a major enabler for 5G. 5G cellular networks will require closer coordination to provide users with greater bandwidth and a wider range of services than 4G to support complex functions such as beamforming, carrier aggregation, and massive MIMO.
The ZED-F9T's nanosecond timing accuracy meets the most stringent requirements for 5G networks worldwide. By significantly reducing the time error of the primary source of cellular network synchronization, the ZED-F9T will help operators maximize the performance of their networks, thereby optimizing their return on investment in 5G, "said Samuli Pietila, Head of product Management at u-blox's Location Product Center.
The multi-band capability of the timing module allows it to compensate for ionospheric errors from all GNSS satellite constellations and reduce timing errors in clear skies to less than 5 nanoseconds without the need for external GNSS correction services. To further improve local accuracy, the ZED-F9T has a differential timing mode that allows the exchange of correction data with other adjacent GNSS timing receivers over a communication network.
"ZED-F9T also aims to address issues regarding the integrity and resiliency of timing synchronization solutions for critical infrastructure applications based on GNSS. By combining simultaneous reception of four GNSS satellite constellations with multi-band signal reception, ZED-F9T will provide network operators with unmatched resistance to spoofing and jamming attacks." Referring to the module's ability to simultaneously receive multi-band signals from the US GPS, Europe's Galileo, Russia's Glonass and China's Beidou satellites, Pietila added.
Access to all four satellite constellations enhances the receiver's global coverage and improves timing availability in challenging signal environments, ultimately providing more reliable performance. The ZED-F9T also includes several advanced security features such as secure start, secure interface, and Time Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (T-RAIM) to provide the highest level of timing integrity.
In addition, the ZED-F9T supports all four GNSS constellations, making it easy for developers to design a single product to serve the global market, simplifying Oems' product lines. The module provides a single RF input for all GNSS bands, simplifying antenna selection. Onboard diplexers, followed by dual SAW filters, provide excellent signal selectivity and out-of-band attenuation. It comes in a 54-pin grille array package and measures only 17.0 x 22.0 x 2.4mm, so it can be easily integrated.
