Ultra-low power Bosch BMI270 smart IMU for wearable devices

     Bosch's BMI270 Intelligent Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The ultra-low power IMU uses Bosch's MEMS process technology to greatly reduce accelerometer offset and increase sensitivity. The BMI270 includes intuitive gesture, context and activity recognition and integrates a plug-and-play pedometer, making it ideal for applications such as wearables, hearables, augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR). The BMI270 is 2.5mm x 3.0mm x 0.8mm and is compatible with Bosch's BMI160, BMI260, BMI261 and BMI263 IMU pins and can be directly replaced in existing designs.

     The Bosch BMI270 IMU is available in two application-specific versions, both of which integrate a 16-bit triaxis gyroscope and a 16-bit triaxis accelerometer. Designed for the "Gesture" version of Google™ 's Wear OS, users can navigate the device using wrist gestures such as flick in/pop out, arm up/down, and wrist shake. The Scenarios and Activities edition has advanced features for recognizing situational activities and changes in activities, such as standing, walking, and sitting in a car. The industry's first self-calibrating gyroscope built into the IMU uses Bosch's unique static component realigning (CRT) function to compensate for MEMS welding drift, saving original equipment manufacturers (Oems) valuable time and cost during testing and manufacturing.

     The BMI270 device can handle multiple functions such as activity tracking, step counting and gesture recognition independently without waking up the main system processor, thus extending system battery life. These processor-independent features include sending an interrupt signal when a certain number of steps are reached, or activating GPS and setting up a geo-fence when the user stands up and starts walking. The device features an intelligent power management system that runs powerful and accurate gesture and activity recognition at ultra-low power consumption with a current consumption of only 30μA.
