Vishay introduces the industry's first 4-quadrant silicon PIN photodiode in a surface-mount package

     Vishay Intertechnology's Optoelectronics Group has introduced the industry's first four-quadrant silicon PIN photodiode in a standard surface-mount package for automotive applications. The Vishay Semiconductors K857PE combines high light sensitivity with low 0.1% crosstalk and virtually no tolerance between segments to provide a wide range of sensor and control applications for the automotive, consumer and industrial markets.

     The AEC-Q101-certified device features four monolithic PIN diodes (each with an effective area of 1.6 mm2) integrated into a single 4.72 mm x 4.72 mm x 0.8 mm top-view surface-mount package. The sides of the K857PE package are opaque, which eliminates stray light shining onto the photodiode, resulting in an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. The linear light response capability of the device can be used for small signal detection in automotive rain/light sensors, industrial automation systems, laser beam alignment and virtual reality applications.

     The photodiode is based on epitaxy technology and has a wide sensitivity range of 690 nm to 1050 nm, with 8.5 µA reverse current per segment at Ee = 1 mW/cm2 and wavelength of 850 nm. The device has a daylight blocking filter, a half-sensitivity Angle of ±60°, and operates in a temperature range of -40 ° C to +110 ° C. The RoHS compliant, halogen-free and Vishay Green K857PE has a J-STD-020 compliant floor life of 168 hours.
