Vishay's ultra-small proximity sensor consumes only 6.63 µA

     Vishay Intertechnology Optoelectronics announced the introduction of a new ultra-small, ultra-low power fully integrated proximity sensor, the VCNL36825T, to improve efficiency and performance in consumer electronics and industrial applications. The Vishay Semiconductors VCNL36825T uses a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) that integrates a photodiode, signal processing IC, and 12-bit ADC in a 2.0 mm x 1.25 mm x 0.5 mm small surface mount package. The diameter of the photosensitive hole is only 1.6 mm.

     The newly released proximity sensor is 76% smaller than the previous generation of devices, and the reduced light-sensing opening increases design flexibility while reducing costs. The compact VCNL36825T is ideal for space-constrained, battery-powered applications such as detecting whether a user is wearing a true wireless stereo (TWS) headset or a virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) headset. The device has a detection range of 200 mm and has collision detection capabilities for toys as well as consumer electronics and industrial robots. Proximity sensor power consumption as low as 6.63 µA helps improve the efficiency of these applications.

     The VCNL36825T supports an I²C bus communication interface for easy access to proximity signals, and a programmable interrupt feature allows designers to set upper and lower interrupt thresholds to reduce continuous communication with the microcontroller. Proximity sensors use intelligent cancellation technology to eliminate crosstalk, and intelligent continuous design ensures accurate detection and faster response. The peak wavelength of the VCSEL is 940 nm, and no "red tail" can be seen.

     The device offers excellent temperature compensation in the temperature range -40 °C to +85 °C, a moisture sensitivity rating (MSL) of J-STD-020 standard Level 3, and a shop life of 168 hours. Sensors comply with RoHS and Vishay green standards and are halogen-free.
