X-FAB Silicon Foundries , a globally recognized analog/mixed-signal foundry of excellence, announced the launch of a dedicated near-infrared version of the single-photon avalanche Diode (SPAD) device portfolio. Keeping pace with the previous generation of SPAD released in 2021, the new version is also the XH018 platform based on the X-FAB 180-nanometer process. Thanks to the additional process flow added during the manufacturing process, the signal is significantly enhanced while maintaining the same low background noise level, and parameters such as dark count rate, post pulse and breakdown voltage are not negatively affected.
With this latest version of the product, X-FAB has successfully broadened its SPAD product selection and enhanced its capability to address emerging applications critical to numerous NIR capabilities. These emerging applications include time-of-flight sensing, vehicle LiDAR imaging, biophotonics and FLIM research work, as well as a variety of related activities in the medical field. The new single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) device enhances the sensitivity of the entire near infrared (NIR) band, increasing the sensitivity of key wavelengths by 40% and 35% at 850 nm and 905 nm, respectively.
Since UV and visible light have been suppressed, the use of new SPAD devices will reduce the complexity of visible light filtering. As a result, the design of the filter will be simpler and the components involved will be reduced. In addition, because the new SPAD has the exact same substrate size as the previous generation of devices, the process of product transition is easier for customers: customers can simply replace the existing design with a new device and gain significant performance advantages.
X-FAB has compiled a comprehensive PDK for its NIR SPAD version, which includes extensive documentation and application instructions. The optical and electrical simulation models will give engineers the additional design support they need to integrate these devices into circuits in a short time.
